News from the Career Center for Current Students and Alumni

The Career Center offers several resources for EPPL students.  Our services range from workshops forWren Building specific professional paths to individualized appointments with a career advisor.  Many of you will soon be approaching the spring hiring season.  Jump start your job search by making sure your résumé is polished and ready! The Career Center offers individual help with résumé writing and reviewing. If you need help getting started with your résumé or want advice on improving it, feel free to make an appointment by calling 221- 3231. You may also e-mail your resume to us for review (e-mail to: scturn@wm.edu).  We will review it and provide feedback and suggestions.

Alumni Database

The Alumni Mentors Database is a wonderful resource for current students who are interested in learning more about a particular field of work or looking to network. You can access this resource by going to the following website: http://www.wm.edu/career/AlumniMentor.cfm. We would also like to encourage those of you that are working professionals to consider becoming a mentor. Your experience and knowledge would be of great use to those looking to enter the field for the first time. To volunteer as a mentor, please contact Sandy Turnage at scturn@wm.edu.

Keep an eye out for Mock Interviews. This spring the Career Center will be providing mock interview opportunities for students in all areas of the EPPL program. Counselors, teachers, higher education administrators, this means you! We are currently working on getting professionals in a variety of areas to come to campus and conduct these mock interviews in an effort to get everyone ready for their job searches. Stay tuned for more information!

Internship: A Journey of Discovery

Jobila Williams, ’07 talks about the summer higher education internship she participated in during the summer of 2006.

Where was your internship?
I had three internships: Office of Academic Advising at W&M, Access Center at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, and the Summer Transition Program at UVA.

Give a brief description of your duties, activities, etc.
In the Office of Academic Advising here at the College, I assisted with advising incoming transfer students, compiling the faculty advising manual, and creating all of the advising presentations for orientation.
